Earlier, Trump directed his administration to impose tariffs and sanctions on Colombia, hours after its leftist president refused to allow two military planes carrying deported migrants to land, punishing a US security partner for deviating even slightly from his immigration policies.

The US will not impose the feared tariffs on Colombia after striking an agreement, according to the White House. The South American administration is said to have agreed to all of Trump’s requirements.

US stock index futures fell in early Asian trading hours Monday on concerns that China’s DeepSeek’s AI model could disrupt the technology business. Last week, DeepSeek released an improved AI model that it claims is competitive with OpenAI’s technology.

China’s factory activity fell to its lowest level since August, as production slowed ahead of the eight-day Lunar New Year break.

Oil plummeted as Trump launched his first round of penalties and tariffs, highlighting threats to the global economy and commerce.
