Vice President JD Vance said he believes the US government is on track to shut down, seeking to pin the blame on Democrats one day before federal funding is set to lapse. China’s factory activity extended its decline into a sixth month, the longest slump since 2019, as the economy descends into a slowdown after a growth spurt to start the year. Bank of Japan board members discussed the appropriate timing of an interest rate hike at a policy meeting earlier this month that saw two members call for a rate move. Japan’s auction of 2-year government bonds drew the weakest demand since 2009 amid speculation that the Bank of Japan will raise rates soon. President Donald Trump ordered 10% tariffs on imports of softwood timber and lumber, as well as 25% levies on kitchen cabinets, vanities and upholstered wood products, marking his latest bid to use import taxes to shore up domestic manufacturing. Japan’s factory output fell for a second month in August as businesses remained cautious amid a global outlook clouded by US President Donald Trump’s ongoing tariff campaign.
