Japan’s Takaichi is set to become the country’s first female prime minister, facing the problems of quelling dissatisfaction over rising living costs, dealing with the Trump administration, and resurrecting the fortunes of a ruling party that has lost its electoral power.

Trump listed rare earths, fentanyl, soybeans, and Taiwan as the US’s top issues with China, emphasising the contentious issues the two sides intend to address at the bargaining table as a shaky trade truce nears its end.

The Trump administration cautioned China not to retaliate against foreign firms helping the US build essential industries, after Beijing last week sanctioned the US affiliates of a South Korean shipping giant over its intentions to invest in the American maritime sector.

The US Senate will postpone consideration of fresh sanctions legislation against Russia until after Trump’s scheduled meeting with Russia’s Putin, the chamber’s Republican leader announced.
