Morning Juice – US Session Prep (12th January)
Sentiment
The US dollar and long-dated Treasuries started the week on the back foot as concerns over the Federal Reserve’s independence weighed on sentiment. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said the US central bank had been served with grand jury subpoenas from the Justice Department that threaten a criminal indictment, marking a sharp escalation in the Trump administration’s attacks on the institution.
Speculation that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will call for a snap election continues to rise; the Yomiuri newspaper reported that Takaichi may call for a vote on Feb. 8th or Feb. 15th.
