The US economy is poised to become more reliant on spending by the government and businesses for growth in 2026 as inflation driven by the Iran war hits consumers. Oil climbed from the highest close in almost four years as the US ramped up pressure on Iran, signaling no letup in its naval blockade and seeking the forfeiture of seized tankers linked to the Islamic Republic. President Donald Trump told Axios he will not lift a naval blockade of Iran’s ports until he secures a deal with Tehran to address the country’s nuclear program, extending a standoff over the Strait of Hormuz that has caused a global energy crisis. Jerome Powell said he’ll remain at the Federal Reserve as a governor after his term as chair of the central bank ends, putting an end to months of speculation as to whether he planned to stay or go.
