Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said Japan will respond to developments in foreign exchange appropriately at any time, staying in tune with her recent remarks even after the yen slid to its weakest level against the dollar since 1986. The yen slid to its weakest level against the dollar since 1986, a milestone that will generate unease in Japan and put traders on high alert for authorities wading into the market. Oil headed for the biggest quarterly decline since the pandemic as flows through the Strait of Hormuz accelerated following progress on a peace deal, with Morgan Stanley warning of a potential glut. A top Iranian official reiterated the country’s determination to maintain control over maritime traffic moving through the Strait of Hormuz, raising the stakes ahead of fresh negotiations with the US on ending their war for good. China’s factory and non-manufacturing activity fared better than expected in June, as booming exports offset cooling growth in the domestic economy. Australia’s central bank opted to hold its key interest rate two weeks ago to assess how the economy was adjusting to earlier tightening, while also keeping an eye on fallout in the property market. The European Union and China set an October deadline to make progress on trade disagreements, as tensions rise between the two economic powers.
