Brent oil slipped after surging almost 6% over the previous two sessions, as traders weighed continued hostilities between the US and Iran against efforts to broker a new ceasefire. The Trump administration vowed to impose a fresh 50% tariff on some Canadian goods over what it said was unfair treatment of American alcohol, cars and dairy, further inflaming trade tensions between the two neighbors. New Zealand’s annual inflation accelerated to the fastest pace in more than two years, fanned by soaring fuel prices and bolstering the case for the Reserve Bank to execute back-to-back interest- rate increases. Andy Burnham named former Defense Secretary John Healey to be his Chancellor of the Exchequer in a surprise move by the UK’s new prime minister that fueled speculation about a bigger increase in military spending. The Houthis, an Iran-backed Yemeni group, vowed to impose a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia, prompting the military coalition in Yemen that’s led by the kingdom to say it had taken steps to protect vessels sailing the Red Sea.
