Trump announced plans to impose previously threatened tariffs of up to 25% on Mexico and Canada by February 1st, maintaining his claim that America’s two immediate neighbours are permitting an influx of unauthorised migrants and narcotics into the US.
Treasuries rose in their first trading session since Trump’s inauguration as president of the US, highlighting relief over the lack of major trade tariff pronouncements.
On his first day in office, Trump refrained from announcing China-specific tariffs, instead instructing his team to fight unfair trade practices around the world and investigate whether Beijing had complied with a pact made during his first term.
Oil prices fluctuated between gains and losses as traders processed Trump’s barrage of promises and executive actions, including the threat of tariffs on Canada and intentions to increase American energy production.
